Adapting To Drought Stress

The first to introduce a unique protein that allows corn plants to efficiently use available water when drought conditions arise.

The Importance of Protein Development

As corn grows, its health depends on the production of essential proteins. Under normal, low-stress conditions, RNA strands allow what's called a "message" (encoded in a plant's DNA) to be translated into the production of proteins.

With cspB

DroughtGard Hybrids utilize a beneficial cspB (cold shock protein B) inside the plant to help reduce the impacts of drought stress. cspB is a gene derived from a naturally occuring soil bacterium, Bacillus subtilus. During drought stress, cspB takes on the role of an RNA chaperone, preventing RNA strands from folding, allowing the plant to continue protein production.

Genetic Selection — Potential DroughtGard Hybrids products are tested across multiple years and environments to identify the ones that offer a clear, native ability to tolerate stressful growing conditions including drought.         

         

Insertion & Testing — The drought-tolerant biotech trait is integrated into potential DroughtGard Hybrids products, then evaluated for yield performance under stress conditions.
