The Genuity^® Pipeline

Goal: Designed to help farmers mitigate the risk of yield loss when experiencing drought stress.

• Part of an overall system that combines germplasm selected for its drought-tolerant characteristics, Monsanto’s biotechnology drought tolerant trait, together with agronomic recommendations.
• Our on-farm trials in 2012 are focused on giving farmers a chance to see the performance of these hybrids and to give us feedback to help us make commercial decisions.
• Genuity^® VT Triple PRO^®, Genuity^® VT Double PRO^® and Roundup Ready^® Corn 2 technologies will serve as the agronomic trait platforms for DroughtGard Hybrids in the 2012 trials.
• Target introduction geography: Western Great Plains, United States.

Goal: Boost intrinsic yield potential of corn hybrids.

• Enhanced productivity per acre brings more yield.
• Higher-Yielding Corn could boost the intrinsic yield potential of corn hybrids, bringing more value-and more opportunity-to farmers.
• This additional yield opportunity would be additive to a total system that includes enhanced genetics and agronomic improvements, creating a package with the highest yield potential.

Goal: Two modes of action for increased insect control and durability.

The project incorporates RNAi technology as its second mode of action. RNAi is a natural process that occurs in cells to help protect their health.

This enhanced control and durability against corn rootworm would offer:

• Increased yield benefits
• Reduced input costs from insecticides
• Protection against other environmental stressors

Goal: Designed to provide farmers in the Central Corn Belt yield stability during intermittent drought.

• Potential to reduce costs for irrigated acres and improve yield stability during dry years
• Minimize the impact of moisture stress in water-limited environments

Goal: Deliver higher yields under normal nitrogen applications or stabilize yields under reduced nitrogen application rates.

• Nitrogen is one of the most important inputs for farmers in the Corn-Growing Region.
• Nitrogen price volatility in recent years has heightened the need to develop yield-enhancing traits that target improved nitrogen utilization in corn plants.
• Developed a multi-location managed nitrogen testing network to enable development of future products that more efficiently utilize nitrogen.
• Future nitrogen utilization testing in corn will evaluate the response to diverse nitrogen conditions in a broader germplasm base.

Goal: Offer broad control of corn insects.

• Next generation of above-ground insect protection.
• Offers enhanced durability and insect resistance management.

Goal: Expand farmers' options for weed control.

• This next-generation herbicide-tolerant corn would build on the Roundup Ready platform with two additional herbicide tolerances, including dicamba and glufosinate, to provide farmers more options in their weed management system.

Goal: New weed control option.

• This next-generation herbicide-tolerant product in corn builds on the Roundup platform and would provide farmers with additional herbicide tolerance options.

Goal: A flexible, effective weed management system for growers that offers incremental yield opportunity.

• Offers the highest yield opportunity with more beans per pod and more bushels per acre.
• Provides broader weed control with two modes of action (herbicide tolerance to Roundup^® agricultural herbicides and dicamba) with new Roundup^® Xtend herbicide.

Goal: To produce oil with omega-3 fatty acids.

• Omega-3 fatty acids have reported health benefits, including heart health.
• Similar to soybean oil in taste and shelf life, oil from these soybeans could be used as an ingredient in a wide range of food applications.

Goal: To cost-effectively help meet recent dietary guidelines to eliminate trans fats and significantly lower saturated fat content in food products.

• Vistive Gold soybeans combine breeding and biotechnology to provide soybean oil with mono-unsaturated fat levels similar to olive oil and the low saturated fat content of canola oil.

Goal: Increase yield potential of soybeans.

• Would be stacked with Genuity^® Roundup Ready 2 Yield^® and other traits in our pipeline, providing an additive yield boost over today’s Roundup Ready^® soybean varieties.

Goal: Provide an additional yield boost over First Generation Higher-Yielding Soybeans.

• Opportunity for increased plant growth and enhanced water use efficiency under moderate water-deficit conditions

Goal: Provide growers with the most effective weed management system available.

• This product would provide two additional modes of action combined with Genuity^® Roundup Ready Flex^® to provide cotton growers with an additional choice for weed management.

Goal: Provide third unique mode of action against insect and worm pests.

• Third-generation insect control product that would build on the success of the first and second generation Bollgard products.
• Provide enhanced insect protection, including improved control of beet and fall armyworms.
• Provide enhanced, season-long protection.

Goal: Reduce insecticidal spray applications and increase yield potential.

• The Cotton Lygus Control product would be the first to extend the spectrum of insect control to piercing-sucking Lygus bugs.
• Lygus damage bolls and reduce lint yield and quality.

Goal: Improved water use and irrigation cost savings..

• Growing demand for fiber combined with the pressure farmers face from dry growing conditions is driving Monsanto’s efforts to develop Drought-Tolerant Cotton.
• First-generation trait is designed to deliver improved water use in cotton.
• Has the potential to provide irrigation cost savings and reduce crop loss in dryland production.

Goal: Maximum flexibility and choice for weed management.

• Would offer farmers greater flexibility through an extended application window up to the first flower and opportunity to apply Roundup^® herbicide at higher rates for enhanced weed control.

Goal: Provide higher quality and higher-yielding alfalfa.

• Would enable alfalfa farmers to reduce lignin, ultimately providing alfalfa producers with higher quality and higher forage yield potential.

Goal: Increase production without increasing inputs.

• Could improve the profitability and sustainability of canola production.
• Increase productivity per acre through higher yield potential.

Goal: Offer a second mode of action of herbicide tolerance.

• Offers flexibility to have multiple herbicide choices

Goal: Identify promising genes that can alter alfalfa agronomics by increasing forage yield.

Goal: Improve yield potential, and both stress and herbicide tolerance.

• Wheat yield and stress technology, which would be stacked with herbicide-tolerance traits to offer multiple modes of weed control, would offer growers better yield potential under average stress growing conditions.
