Tour Stop 3 - Early Development

Large-Scale Transformation

Duration: 12-24 Months
Genes in Testing: fewer than 100

Once we have successfully grown transgenic plants with the desired gene, we move them to our growth chambers for observation. After extensive quality assurance we narrow down that group and move the most successful candidates to greenhouses for continued research.

GROWTH CHAMBERS 

Growth Chambers

  • Our growth chambers are home to thousands of candidate plants. This is where we test them for viability after transformation.
  • We have over 100 climate-controlled growth chambers at our Chesterfield, MO location.
  • The most viable seedlings move to the greenhouses.
GREENHOUSES 

Greenhouses

  • Here the plants are monitored to see which candidates are performing the best.
  • Because each variety is adapted to different growing conditions we outcross the most successful candidates with other crop varieties that might benefit from this trait. This natural breeding process is used to generate plants with the new trait, without having to go through the transformation process each time.
MQC: QUALITY ASSURANCE 

MQC: Quality Assurance

  • Throughout all genetic transformation processes, quality assurance is performed on the candidate plants to ensure that the new gene is expressing as expected.
  • In the growth chambers, MQC takes samples from the mature plants and tests them against trait expression data that has already been collected.
  • This is a crucial step to determine seed quality.

Insect Management

  • Fourth Generation Below-Ground Insect Protection
    This product could provide farmers with multiple modes of action for increased root protection and crop durability against corn rootworm.
  • Fourth Generation Above-Ground Insect Protection
    This next-generation product works above the ground and is designed to offer yield protection and increased durability against a variety of pests like corn earworm and fall armyworm.

Weed Management

  • Fourth Generation Weed Control
    This product contains multiple herbicide tolerances that could help farmers protect fields from broadleaf and grass weeds.

Yield and Stress

  • Corn Yield & Stress II
    This second-generation corn Yield and Stress trait will use multiple genes to protect the corn plant from stress, helping farmers grow more corn on their land.
  • Fusarium Stalk Rot Resistant Corn
    Fusarium Stalk Rot impacts nearly all world regions where corn is grown. This product has the potential to improve corn's resistance to this devastating disease and is being developed through advanced plant breeding techniques for improved plant health.
  • Ultra High-Density Corn
    This product is designed to increase plant population and has the potential to help farmers sustainably grow more crops on each acre.

Weed Management

  • Fourth-Generation Herbicide-Tolerant Soy
    This high-yield potential soybean could also help farmers manage weeds because of its additional modes of action for control and its tolerance to certain herbicides.

Yield and Stress

  • Next Generation Higher-Yielding Soybeans
    This is a next-generation product developed by evaluating multiple genes in soybean products to identify those with the potential for higher yields.
  • Third-Generation Insect-Protected Soybeans
    Third-Generation insect-protected soybeans have the potential to provide durable protection by controlling primary and secondary Lepidopteran insect pests.

There are no cotton products in this phase of the pipeline at this time.

Insect Management

  • Insect Protected and Roundup Ready® Sugarcane
    This sugarcane would help growers in Brazil control weeds and damaging pests like the sugarcane borer.

Weed Management

  • Dicamba Tolerant Canola
    Dicamba tolerance, when stacked with Roundup Ready® technology, is designed to add an additional mode of action of herbicide tolerance to this seed so farmers have another option in controlling weeds.
  • Wheat Herbicide Tolerance 1
    This herbicide-tolerant (dicamba) product is designed to give growers more flexible and effective weed management options.
  • Wheat Herbicide Tolerance 2
    This herbicide-tolerant (glyphosate) product is designed to give growers flexible and effective weed management options.
