Tour Stop 4 - Advanced Development

Field Testing

Duration: 12-24 Months
Genes in Testing: less than 5

Next, we plant the most successful candidates from our greenhouses in our test fields and in our Research Centers. Trials are vital to the development of all new seed varieties, including genetically modified crops. They allow us to:

  • Develop important scientific information.
  • Assess the performance of a new trait.
  • Generate the necessary environmental safety data required by governmental regulatory authorities that evaluate commercial product approvals.
Field Trials

Field Trials

  • We conduct our field trials in stages. Testing typically begins with a small number of plants and expands as more information is obtained.
  • Results from small-scale field trials are used to further screen and select candidates to be tested in larger field trials.

Research Centers

We developed our Research Centers to provide growers, dealers and agronomists with the latest information regarding production practices and as a way to reinforce stewardship of biotech products to enhance their sustainability.

Government Regulations

Adherence to APHIS compliance standards is the starting point for our field-trial compliance programs. Developers conducted initial screening and plant selections in laboratory and greenhouse facilities that met or exceeded government regulations, called APHIS specifications. With this data, developers request authorization from APHIS to conduct isolated small-scale field trials. We implement additional procedures to achieve the highest level of compliance:

  • Comprehensive training for those who conduct field trials and for all those responsible for field-site compliance.
  • Extensive procedures for all field personnel involved in trial work.
  • Documentation of critical points for each trial.
  • Preventative auditing to verify compliance with internal and external standards and to identify process improvement opportunities.

We are committed to meeting and exceeding preventative auditing and self-reporting to encourage employees and cooperators to identify and immediately report incidents of potential non-compliance. While we believe that our compliance program is among the most comprehensive and successful compliance programs in the industry, we continually review and strengthen our practices.

Pipeline Products

Weed Management

  • Third-Generation Herbicide-Tolerant Corn
This product, with both glufosinate and dicamba tolerance, could help farmers manage weeds like waterhemp, kochia and marestail.

Yield and Stress

  • Higher-Yielding Corn
The higher-yielding corn trait, when stacked on top of Genuity® corn products and other corn pipeline traits, could help farmers grow more corn on their land.
  • DroughtGard® Platform Expansion
Combines Industry Leading Drought Tolerance and Root Protection. Adding DroughtGard® Hybrids to SmartStax® PRO expands the offering to corn on corn acres and provides growers a solution to managing corn rootworm and drought.

Weed Management

  • Vistive® Gold + DT (Roundup Ready 2 Xtend™)
Vistive® Gold + DT soybeans could not only provide oil with the mono-unsaturated fat levels similar to olive oil and the low saturated fat content of canola oil, it is also dicamba-tolerant and would give farmers more flexibility in controlling weeds.
  • Second-Generation Soybean Cyst Nematode Resistance
Soybean Cyst Nematode is one of the most devastating pests of soybeans in the U.S. Second-generation resistance has the potential to offer additional protection from multiple races soybean cyst nematodes. This additional protection from Soybean Cyst Nematode is being developed through plant breeding techniques for improved plant health.

Insect Management

  • Lygus Control
The Lygus bug damages cotton bolls and reduces a crop's quality. This product would be the first to extend the spectrum of insect control to this pest.

Weed Management

  • TruFlex™ Roundup Ready® + LibertyLink® Canola
Next-generation TruFlex™ Roundup Ready® + LibertyLink® Canola would offer farmers a second mode of action of herbicide tolerance, giving them the flexibility to have multiple herbicide choices.
