First-Generation Drought-Tolerant Corn

Drought-Tolerant Corn

Water availability is already a major issue in several parts of the world—and the situation is expected to worsen. Now more than ever, farmers need a tool to combat the impact of water shortage on their crops.

For several years, Monsanto scientists have focused on discovering and developing direct drought-tolerant traits for corn through the use of breeding and biotech. Now the first-ever biotech crop with this trait has moved into the last phase before commercialization.

The drought-tolerance gene works by mitigating the impact of low soil-moisture content on the plant's physiology—enabling the corn plant to maintain metabolism for a longer period of time during drought stress.

Drought tolerant technology has the potential to improve on-farm productivity around the world. And it's coming soon.
