For biotech traits, about half of the time a project spends in our pipeline before reaching the market is due to the time it takes to generate data to submit to regulatory agencies, the time it takes to gain regulatory approvals, and the time it takes to breed the new biotech trait into our best and latest hybrids or varieties. We work to reduce these times as much as possible by, for example, carrying out multi-season breeding programs in Hawaii and the Southern Hemisphere and by carrying out the breeding activities in parallel with the regulatory activities. The other half of the pipeline time is related to discovery and early to mid-stage development of the new traits. Because this is research, it is by its nature somewhat unpredictable in terms of how long it will take us to discover and develop any new biotech trait. We are constantly updating our technology to use the latest techniques for gene discovery in order to shorten our timelines, and we partner with many other companies and universities to bring genes into our pipeline which also gives us jumpstart on new traits.
